Khasi tribe dress

Introduction :
The Khasi people are an ethnic group of Meghalaya in north-eastern India with a significant population in the bordering state of Assam, and in certain parts of Bangladesh. The Khasi people form the majority of the population of the eastern part of Meghalaya, and is the state’s largest community, with around 48% of the population of Meghalaya. They are among the few Austroasiatic-speaking peoples in South Asia. A cultural tradition of the Khasi people is that they follow the matrilineal system of descent and inheritance. Under the Constitution of India, the Khasis have been granted the status of Scheduled Tribe.

Men wear:

Jainspong: A golden silk turban.

Jymphong/Putoi: A decorated waist coat, usually black.

Jainteh Syngkai: A waist belt, knotted on the side. It is usually yellow in colour.

Jainboh: A dhoti-like lower garment, usually maroon-coloured.

Women wear:

Sopti Mupmor: A long-sleeved velvet blouse with lace-work around the neck, usually maroon in colour.

Dhara: A pair of gold or yellow-coloured rectangular silk cloth covers for the upper body, fastened crosswise on the shoulders.

Jainpien: A lower garment worn around the waist which reaches till the ankle .

Men’s Ornaments

Thuia: A plume of black and white cock feathers, worn on the back of the head.

Kpieng Paila: A necklace made of coral and gold-foil-wrapped globe beads. Men usually wear it in two lines, with lengths longer in order of increasing sizes of globe beads.

Kynjri Tabah: A silver ornament consisting of two x-shaped bands worn around the body, crossing at heart and the back. A square-shaped carved piece of silver is attached at the crossing and is adorned in the middle by a ruby.

Kynjri Syngkai: A silver ornament worn around the waist.

Ryngkap: A silver quiver with some arrows, worn around the waist.

Sympiah: A fan made of yak’s tail. It is similar to a chamara and is used for whisking in traditional dances.


Women’s Ornaments

Pansngiat: A golden (“ksiar”) or silver (“rupa”) tiara.

Sai Khyllong: A silver hair ornament which hangs down to the lower back. It consists of a principal cord (about 18 inches long) and a triangle-shaped joint from the base of which hangs three identical conical pendants.

Sohshkor Ksiar: Golden earrings.

Shan Ryndang: A semi-circular choker necklace made of gold or silver, usually studded with precious stones like rubies and topazes. It is also known as konopad.

Kpieng Paila: A necklace made of coral and gold-foil-wrapped globe beads. It is usually worn in three lines, with lengths longer in order of increasing sizes of globe beads.

Kynjri Tabah: A long opera-length necklace made of silver.

Taj: An armlet made of silver.

Mahu: A silver bangle worn on the forearm.

Syngkha: Golden bangles worn on the wrists. They are thick and heavy.
